I concur with the last answer. Unless you have been to the Atacama Desert, or any desert, you can't realize how remote this place is. It is about 60kms off the Pan American Highway, and once you get to the sign at the entrance to Paranal it is another 5km at least to the entrance, and then you have to drive another 3km inside the facility to get to the top of the hill. While we were there we did see buses drive past on the main road heading towards Paposo. How frequent they are or even whether they would stop there I would not like to say. If you got off at the sign there is another hours walk up a steeply graded road. It is about 1 3/4 hrs by road from Antofagasta (109 kms). The round trip including the visit was about six hours. What a taxi would cost I wouldn't like to hazard a guess but it would be relatively expensive. Better to hire a car for the day, the route is straightforward.
