OpenAI and Oracle will develop another 4.5 gigawatts of data center capacity, expanding a tie-up that has promised hundreds of billions of dollars in infrastructure investment to keep the U.S. ahead in the global artificial intelligence race.

The 4.5 gigawatt commitment will create more than 100,000 construction and operations roles in the U.S., according to a Tuesday announcement.

The huge deal with Oracle marks a major step forward in OpenAI's journey to 10 gigawatts, as outlined in its four-year, $500 billion Project Stargate strategy. OpenAI confirmed its first site, Stargate I, will be located in Abilene, Texas, with Oracle and OpenAI jointly building it.
