Hundreds of evacuees from the devastating Eaton fire gathered in hallways of the Pasadena Convention Center on Wednesday, Jan. 8, amid gray, smoky skies, while ash rained down outside of the glass doors.

A fire broke out Tuesday night in the hills above Altadena near Eaton Canyon, prompting a response from firefighters. The Eaton fire has burned 10,600 acres and prompted evacuations in the area west of the Eaton Canyon Golf Course, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

The Eaton Fire has burned more than 10,000 acres in northeast Los Angeles County, forcing about 33,000 residents to flee. It has torched homes and burned houses of worship in the communities of Altadena and Pasadena and is responsible for multiple deaths.

The fire has burned about 2,227 acres of brush in the Eaton Canyon area above Altadena, according to Los Angeles County firefighters.

A Do-Not-Drink Water order was issued for Pasadena and evacuated zones of the Eaton Fire, Pasadena Water and Power announced Wednesday.

The 10,000-acre Eaton Fire swept through communities in Pasadena Wednesday morning after torching an unknown number of homes in neighboring Altadena in the San Gabriel Valley. KTLA 5 News reporter Chip Yost was on live television as homes on Glen Avenue near Montana Street went up in flames.
