The All England Club is blaming human error for a glaring mistake by the electronic system that replaced human line judges this year at Wimbledon.

A fully automated system has replaced human line judges at Wimbledon in 2025, a standard practice across tennis events.

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova claimed a game was "stolen" from her during her Wimbledon match against Sonay Kartal due to a failure of the electronic line-calling (ELC) system. A shot by Kartal that was clearly out was not called by the ELC,

The world No53 is 11 years Kartal’s senior and a former French Open finalist. She knocked out Ajla Tomljanovic in the first round and the 31st seed Ashlyn Krueger in the second before coming from a set down to stun four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka on Friday.

Sonay Kartal said there wasn’t much she could do after the electronic line calling system glitched at a crucial moment in the first set of her match against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. The Russian had a game point at 4-4 and Kartal appeared to send the ball wide but a call never came.
