The San Antonio Spurs are signing big man Bismack Biyombo for the remainder of the season, NBA insider Chris Haynes reported Friday. Biyombo, whose second 10-day contract is about to expire, has posted two double-doubles this week as the Spurs finish out the season without injured All-Star center Victor Wembanyama.

After superstar center Victor Wembanyama went down with a season-ending injury, the San Antonio Spurs looked in an unexpected direction to fill their void. The Spurs turned to veteran center Bismack Biyombo, signing him to back-to-back 10-day contracts to become their new starting big man.

Biyombo has started in all five of his appearances with San Antonio, averaging 6.8 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.2 blocks while shooting 66.7 percent from the field in 19.0 minutes per game. He logged back-to-back outings with a double-double in that five-game span.

The San Antonio Spurs, as they build a young core, have the vast majority of their players under contract for at least a few seasons. Plus, they have to keep money on the table to extend Victor Wembanyama, De'Aaron Fox, Jeremy Sochan, and eventually, rookie Stephon Castle when the time comes.

The Spurs have turned to 14-year veteran center Bismack Biyombo, even though the 32-year-old big man played just 25 seconds on the season before making his first start on Thursday. Since then, Biyombo has made two more starts and has earned a 10-day contract from San Antonio.
